Rivian Truck R1T

Electric cars of Rivian

Rivian is an all-new electric-vehicle manufacturer headquartered right outside of Detroit and is primed to set the automotive world on its head with its all-electric truck (the R1T) and its all-electric SUV (the R1S). The Rivian truck debuted first, and the Rivian SUV will follow later. Both vehicles will be ready for rough terrain and semi-autonomous driving capability.

R1T Rivian

The R1T features four electric motors, two located on each axle (front and rear). The front two motors produce 415 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque while the rear two motors produce 420 horsepower and 495 lb-ft of torque. The result is a Rivian-claimed 0–60 mph time of 3.0 seconds.

The Rivian R1T is offered with three battery sizes: 105 kWh, 135 kWh, or 180 kWh.[51] The R1T has a projected range of 230 miles with the smallest battery, 314 miles with the medium battery, and over 400 miles with the largest battery. Extra batteries can be mounted in the R1T’s bed for improved range. Those backup/auxiliary batteries can be charged by another R1T if no charging infrastructure is available.

Who makes Rivian truck?

Rivian Automotive, Inc. is an American electric vehicle automaker and automotive technology company founded in 2009. Rivian is building an electric sport utility vehicle (SUV) and a pickup truck on a “skateboard” platform that can support future vehicles or be adopted by other companies. An electric delivery van is also being built as part of a partnership with Amazon. Rivian started deliveries of its R1T pickup truck in late 2021. As of March 2022, the delivery van and R1S SUV were still in development. The company plans to build an exclusive charging network in the United States and Canada by the end of 2023.

Rivian Truck Interior and Exterior

The future home of rugged adventures and family road trips, Rivian designed interiors as premium spaces meant to be lived in and knocked around. Inspired by overland trips, off-road detours, and long weekends in the woods. The R1T is designed with premium, adventure-proof materials that welcome mud, sand, and everything else you can throw at it.

Inside, the R1T‘s cabin is decked out in leather, wood, and large displays for both the gauge cluster and the infotainment system. The R1T has a large trunk under the front hood, a big storage compartment behind the cab (but in front of the bed), and a lockable in-bed compartment. Overall, Rivian says the truck has 12 cubic feet of lockable storage. The truck’s expandable and collapsible crossbar system allows for mounting gear over the bed and cabin. In the bed are three 110-volt outlets and an air compressor.

R1T colors draw inspiration from the places where nature lovers have been and the things they love. Like Rivian’s silver, the color they first shared with the world at their premiere in LA. Or their yellow, inspired by their logo, the Rivian compass. Or Rivian Blue, their founder’s favorite color.

Rivian towing capacity

You can drive through 3+ feet of water. Rock crawl at a 100% grade. Traverse just about any terrain with 14.9 inches of ground clearance. Tow up to 11,000 lbs. and offers a payload capacity of 1760 pounds. With a 0-60 mph time as quick as 3 seconds, depending on your configuration, it also delivers the on-road handling of a sports car.

Rivian off-road ability

The R1T has an air suspension that allows for 6.5 in (17 cm) of vertical travel — the ground clearance can be as low as 7.9 in (20 cm) or as high as 14.4 in (37 cm). Depending on the wheel configuration, the maximum ground clearance can be even higher, at 14.9 in (38 cm). The maximum wading depth in water is 43.1 inches. Approach, departure, and breakover angles are 35.5, 30, and 26.4 degrees respectively. Custom-made Pirelli 275/65 R20 tires are available as an option.

Custom drive modes—which adjust the suspension, ride height, throttle, and steering—include “All-Purpose, Sport, Conserve, Tow and Off-Road”, plus sub-modes for off-road that include “Rock Crawl and Rally.”

Rivian is offering vehicle options for off-roading: a reinforced underbody shield with tow hooks, a “camp kitchen”—two electric cooking elements, a sink, plus 30 pieces of outdoor cooking/dining equipment—that collapses into the R1T gear tunnel, as well as a roof-top tent for three.

When will the Rivian truck be available?

With supply chain disruptions messing with the auto industry, it’s an especially challenging time for startups like Rivian. After warning of production challenges due to parts shortages early in December, the Illinois-based electric truck maker on Tuesday told some customers they would need to wait another year, until 2023, for their preorders to be delivered.
