While aftermarket customizers have been transferring Chevy engines to Jeeps for a while, it was the Kaiser brand’s choice for the first production CJ to have a V8 (Buick Small Block). This choice gave the iconic all-terrain vehicle an upgrade that gave it a power-to-weight ratio comparable to that of a powerful car. However, with the launch of the YJ Wrangler in 1986, Jeep eliminated this option by offering three in-line units.
Now, nearly 40 years later, the V8 is finally returning to the Wrangler with the Rubicon 392. Under the hood hides an enormous 6.4L engine that generates 470hp and 637Nm (470lb-ft) of torque. The result is a speed of 0-100 km / h (0-60mph) in just 4.5 seconds, making it the fastest and most powerful Wrangler ever. It is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and has permanent all-wheel drive. Jeep has fitted a range of off-road upgrades to the 392 to really increase its off-road potential. Examples include the wide track Dana 44 axles, Fox shocks, and the 17-inch Beadlock-enabled wheelset wrapped in 33-inch off-road tires. Thanks to its ground clearance of around 26cm (10.3 inches), it can lift 81cm (32.5 inches) of water depth. It is planned to go on sale for about $ 60,000 in 2021.
