Returning first class to the big stage, BMW M Motorsport returns to international prototype racing with the BMW M Hybrid V8. As of the 2023 season, this new car is in the new GTP class of the IMSA series; It will compete for glory in prestigious classics like the 24 Hours of Daytona, 12 Hours of Sebring, and the iconic Petit Le Mans. The last major victory with the BMW prototype was the BMW V12 LMR’s 24 Hours of Le Mans title in 1999. The same car also won the 12 Hours of Sebring that season.
Regulations state that LMDh race cars must have a combustion engine and an electric motor. While each manufacturer can use its own combustion engine, the electric motor, battery, and transmission are standard parts. BMW M Motorsport is working closely with legendary Italian race car specialist Dallara to develop the BMW M Hybrid V8.
BMW Group Designworks chose to use a camouflage red, white and blue color scheme for the design of the BMW M Hybrid V8, complete with 50th-anniversary graphics. BMW Icon headlights, M mirrors, and taillight application also refer to BMW‘s history in motorsport. We will be able to see this futuristic racing car next year when the IMSA season starts.
