NASA Artemis III Spacesuit AxEMU: A New Step in Space Exploration

NASA’s Artemis program is all set to make history with the first woman to ever walk on the Moon. As part of this groundbreaking mission, NASA has selected Axiom Space to develop the modern spacesuits for Artemis III. Called the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit, or AxEMU, the spacesuit incorporates the latest technology, enhanced mobility, and added protection from hazards on the Moon.

The AxEMU builds on NASA’s spacesuit prototype developments and includes advancements in technology, training, astronaut feedback on comfort and maneuverability, and compatibility with other NASA systems. The suit will fit a broad range of crew members, accommodating at least 90 percent of the US male and female population.

NASA is using a commercial services contract for the development of the new spacesuit, which allows Axiom Space to pursue other commercial customers for their moonwalking services. This mutually beneficial approach helps bolster an emerging commercial market and grants NASA the right to use the data and technologies developed under the contract for future exploration efforts.

With the AxEMU, NASA is taking a new step forward in its goal to build a robust economy on the Moon by working with commercial service providers. The partnership between NASA and Axiom is critical to landing astronauts on the Moon, advancing long-term lunar exploration and scientific discovery, and inspiring the Artemis Generation.
