Since its launch in 1997, the Diamond DA40 has proven to be one of the most popular versatile general-purpose aviation vehicles. Diamond is about to usher in a new era for the DA40 and general aviation with the eDA40 electric aircraft powered by an all-electric propulsion system and DC fast charging developed by Electric Power Systems. This will make the eDA40 the first fast-charging aircraft certified under FAA and European GA rules, with full certification expected to be completed in 2023. Diamond estimates that this electric aircraft he developed will have a 90-minute flight and a 20-minute full charge time, resulting in a 40% reduction in operating costs compared to the piston engine-equipped DA40. Let’s also add that this new electric version will continue all the advantages of the fossil fuel-using DA40 airframe, such as four-seater seating and excellent flight characteristics.
